About the artist:
James Ryan Foreman

Tell us about yourself:

I’m James, I’m an English designer & illustrator. I predominantly draw influence from mid-century illustration, classic Americana advertising, and humorous parody comic strips such as Viz magazine. I try to incorporate the simplicity, nostalgia, and humour of these references in my work, whether it be branding, book covers or editorial illustration. Someone recently described my work as ‘big boy bubblegum graphics’ which made me laugh and stuck with me somehow.

I predominantly work digitally these days, however I’m still prone to traditional mediums, occasionally picking up the odd paint brush to work by hand. I have an ongoing fascination with sign writing and hand lettering, something I first dabbled with when I lived and worked in Sydney Australia (with the very talented Will Lynes and Nathan Pickering of Lynes & Co) and later in England with the amazing Ash Bishop at Brilliant Signs.

How did you keep busy with time on your hands at home?

I’ve been happily stranded in Romania (long story). It’s been an interesting year (for all of us), however, in my case it has given me the opportunity to shift my focus towards more ‘passion based projects’ one of which was the Deus Quarantee competition which I thoroughly enjoyed.

In terms of work, I recently completed another book cover for British publisher Warcry Press entitled Final Agony, it’s centered around the cult British boxing figure Paul Sykes which was a lot of fun; if you don’t know him I’d thoroughly recommend a quick gander on YouTube, he’s hilarious. Currently I’m finalizing the branding for a UK health food company due to launch later this year as well as a pending personal YouTube channel where you’ll be able to join me on a fortnightly basis for what I’m calling ‘let’s make cool sh*t’.
